Another guitar workshop is now in the pipeline.

This is to be held in the South of France and is scheduled between July 31st and August 8th. The idea has come from my old friend and musical compatriot Remy Froissart. Remy and I go back to the 'sixties and it is always a huge pleasure to work with him. The location will be Remy's family home which is a renovated farm complex not far from the village of Sainte Foy de Peyroliers to the south west of Toulouse.
The setting is idyllic, with distant views of the Pyrenees, a pool, a mulberry tree, and even a small recording studio. Remy and I are hoping to entice ace sound engineer Mike Walker away from his Greek island for the occasion.
The main reason for settling on the dates has been to ensure the services of Richard the chef whose specialty is fine regional fare

Our intention is to make the whole thing as reasonably priced as possible.
Please feel free to ask Remy more about it on remy.froissart@wanadoo.fr.

Last year photographer and filmmaker Ben Edwards came along for the ride and documented us in glorious black and white. The result is a book of great photos that also present a realistic picture of life on the road.

Here is a rare shot of Ben himself. It was taken in artist Niel Bally’s kitchen. Niel has been my host whenever I have played at The Green Man festival. A number of shots taken in Niel’s studio and up on the nearby Black Mountains are included in Ben’s book. Some of Niel’s work can be viewed on Facebook under his name. In the photo above Ben and I are pondering over the potential convolutions of a guitar workshop before the idea came to fruition. The grim reality is apparent in the ‘after’ photo on location at Cubertou in the south of France.
Ben will be hosting three separate weeks there again this summer. Guitarists in residence this time are Clive Carroll, Remy Froissart, John Etheridge and Carlos Bonell. ben@musicwokshops.co.uk

On the home front sessions are booked at the end of the month with clarinettist Dick Lee. Dick played on my last studio recording ‘Travellers’ Prayer’. It has been quite a while since then but when Dick’s parts are down the end could be in sight. www.dicklee.org.uk

Getting a couple of tracks down with distant neighbour Johnny Dickinson for his new CD is still very much on the cards. Recently snow stopped play up here in the frozen north. Time now to make tentative moves across the high hills.

One last piece of news that is somewhat out of the blue is that Martin are making me a new guitar --- what is called a signature model. The specs are still under wraps at the moment as the prototype is being worked on. All, or at least more, should be revealed next month. I’m as intrigued as anyone.
JOHN RENBOURN Master Class

Cubertou

John will host two separate days of guitar classes focussing on advanced fingerstyle technique.  Places are very limited, so advance booking is well advised.  There will also be an evening performance on the 5th included, as part of a one day ticket.
We can advise on local guest houses and hotels in the area.
